E-bike battery fires don't have to happen
“[I]t is of the utmost importance that cells specified for your battery pack are sourced from a vendor that utilizes manufacturing methods and quality control procedures of the highest caliber.”
Many bike shops have been experiencing fires due to faulty or malfunctioning lithium-ion batteries. As such, S&W will ask any person needing service on their e-bike, purchased on-line or in a big-box store, to take their batteries home with them when dropping their bike off . Further, while S&W can service the mechanical components of e-bikes purchased on-line or in big-box stores, we cannot service any of the electrical components. However, if the bike is purchased here or is a bike brand we carry, S&W can perform all services, both mechanical and electrical.
“How do you prevent charging incidents like this from happening to your e-bike? Avoid aftermarket and off-brand or bargain batteries for your bike, first of all. Stick to the manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations. Furthermore, e-bike batteries that are charging should never be left unattended. If you’re charging your e-bike in the garage, set a timer to remind yourself to unplug it when it’s done, and if you’re leaving the house, unplug it and finish charging it when you return.” (Hurford, 2022)
